About Al Ain Zoo

Al Ain Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the Middle East. It was established in 1969 in Al Ain, on the initiative of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who had a strong interest in protecting wildlife.

The zoo is home to hundreds of animals from many species, including animals native to the Arabian Peninsula, such as Arabian oryx, Arabian gazelles and sand cats, as well as African species like giraffes, lions, rhinos and hippos.

Conservation is a central part of its mission. The zoo runs breeding programmes for endangered species, particularly those native to Arabia, and works with international conservation organisations.

The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre, located at the zoo, educates visitors about desert ecosystems, wildlife and the UAE's environmental heritage.

The zoo offers experiences such as safari drives, animal encounters and educational programmes for schools.

Families visit in large numbers, especially during the cooler months, making the zoo one of Al Ain's main attractions.
