About Emirates Global Aluminium
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is one of the world's largest producers of premium aluminium. It was formed in 2013 by combining Dubai Aluminium (Dubal), whose origins go back to the late 1970s, with Emirates Aluminium (Emal). EGA is jointly owned by Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi investment company, and the Investment Corporation of Dubai.
The company operates large aluminium smelters at Jebel Ali in Dubai and Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi. It also mines bauxite in Guinea and operates an alumina refinery in the UAE, giving it control over more of its supply chain.
Aluminium is used in construction, cars, aircraft, packaging, electronics and power lines. EGA supplies customers in many countries, making aluminium one of the UAE's most important non-oil exports.
Producing aluminium requires very large amounts of electricity, which makes energy a major part of the industry's cost and carbon footprint. EGA has introduced CelestiAL, aluminium produced using solar power from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, as a lower-carbon product.
Technology development is a notable part of the company's story. EGA developed its own smelting technology, which it has licensed to other producers, demonstrating industrial innovation from the UAE.
Recycling is another growing area, as recycled aluminium requires far less energy than primary production. EGA has invested in recycling capacity.
Aluminium has been central to the UAE's industrial diversification strategy, alongside other sectors such as petrochemicals and manufacturing.
Decarbonising heavy industry is a major global challenge, and lower-carbon aluminium is increasingly demanded by car makers and other customers.
EGA is a major industrial company rather than a startup, and Startups UAE includes it among the UAE's leading industrial businesses.
