About Mohammed Bin Rashid Innovation Fund (MBRIF)
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Innovation Fund, known as MBRIF, is a UAE federal initiative launched in 2016 under the Ministry of Finance. It supports innovative startups and small businesses based in the UAE.
The fund's distinctive feature is its guarantee scheme. Instead of lending money directly, MBRIF guarantees loans that participating banks make to innovative companies, reducing the risk for lenders and making it easier for young businesses to get financing.
Alongside financing, MBRIF runs an accelerator programme that provides mentoring, workshops, networking and support to help innovators grow their companies and become ready for investment.
The programme is open to companies in sectors such as technology, healthcare, education, renewable energy, transport, water and space, among others.
Access to finance is one of the biggest challenges for startups and small businesses, especially those without assets that banks can use as collateral. Guarantee schemes are one way governments try to address this gap.
MBRIF's work fits within the UAE's National Innovation Strategy, which aims to make the country one of the most innovative in the world.
Startups UAE lists MBRIF among the UAE's startup financing programmes.
