About Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)
The Roads and Transport Authority, known as RTA, is the Dubai government body responsible for roads, traffic and public transport. It was established in 2005 to bring transport planning and operations under one authority.
RTA runs Dubai Metro, which opened in 2009 and is one of the longest driverless metro systems in the world, along with Dubai Tram, public buses, water buses and abras on Dubai Creek.
It regulates taxis and limousines, licenses drivers and vehicles, and manages parking through partners. The Nol card is used to pay for metro, bus, tram and some parking.
Road projects are a major part of its work, including new highways, interchanges, bridges and tunnels designed to handle the city's rapid growth.
RTA has been an early adopter of technology, with smart apps, digital services and trials of autonomous vehicles and electric buses, and it has set goals for a share of trips to be made by self-driving transport.
Micromobility, such as shared e-scooters and bicycles, is also regulated by RTA in designated zones.
Startups UAE lists RTA among Dubai's key government authorities, important for mobility and traveltech startups.
