About Sharjah Islamic Bank

Sharjah Islamic Bank (SIB) is a bank headquartered in Sharjah. It began in the 1970s as a conventional bank and later converted its operations to Islamic banking, making it one of the early examples of a full conversion in the UAE. It is listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, and the government of Sharjah is a major shareholder.

SIB provides Shariah-compliant banking services for individuals, businesses and government entities. Retail customers can open accounts, use cards and access home finance, car finance and personal finance. Corporate clients use the bank for financing, trade services and treasury products.

Converting from conventional to Islamic banking involves restructuring products, contracts and operations to comply with Shariah principles, overseen by a Shariah supervisory board. SIB's conversion reflected growing demand for Islamic financial services in the UAE.

As one of Sharjah's main banks, SIB plays an important role in the emirate's economy, supporting businesses, real estate and government projects. Sharjah has a large resident population and a significant industrial sector.

Digital banking services allow customers to manage accounts, make payments and apply for products through mobile and online channels.

The bank has issued sukuk, Islamic bonds, to raise funding, contributing to the development of Islamic capital markets.

Islamic finance is a major part of the UAE banking sector, with several dedicated Islamic banks and Islamic windows at conventional banks.

Competition in UAE banking is strong, and banks with a regional base often build on their local relationships while expanding nationwide.

Sharjah Islamic Bank is an established institution rather than a startup, and Startups UAE lists it among the Islamic banks of the UAE.
