About TAQA
TAQA, the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company, is an energy and utilities group founded in 2005. It is listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange and is majority owned by ADQ, one of Abu Dhabi's sovereign investment holding companies.
TAQA's core business today is power and water. In Abu Dhabi, it owns and operates power generation and water desalination plants, as well as the transmission and distribution networks that deliver electricity and water to homes and businesses. This makes it one of the largest integrated utilities in the region.
Water desalination is especially important in the UAE, where most drinking water comes from turning seawater into fresh water. Large plants supply Abu Dhabi's growing population and industries.
The company also has power and water assets in other countries, and it has had oil and gas operations in markets outside the UAE.
Clean energy is a growing focus. TAQA is a shareholder in Masdar, alongside ADNOC and Mubadala, which gives it exposure to renewable energy projects worldwide. It has also invested in energy efficiency and lower-carbon technologies.
Grid modernisation is another priority, with investment in smart meters, digital monitoring and infrastructure upgrades to support a growing share of renewable energy.
Utilities play a critical role in a country with extreme summer heat, where electricity demand for cooling is very high and reliable supply is essential.
The UAE has committed to net zero by 2050, which requires major changes in how power and water are produced, including more solar energy and cleaner desalination.
TAQA is a national utility rather than a startup, and Startups UAE includes it for its role in powering and supplying water to Abu Dhabi.
