About Viu UAE
Viu is a video streaming service owned by PCCW, the Hong Kong technology and media group. It launched in the Middle East in 2017 and is available in the UAE and other countries in the region.
Viu is best known for Asian content, especially Korean dramas and variety shows, which have built a large fan base in the Arab world. It also offers Arabic content, Bollywood titles and its own original productions.
To serve regional viewers, Viu provides Arabic subtitles and dubbing for many shows, making Asian content accessible to audiences who do not speak Korean or other Asian languages.
The service has followed a freemium model in some markets, offering free content with advertising and premium subscriptions without ads and with earlier access to new episodes.
Partnerships with telecom operators help Viu reach customers through bundled packages and billing through phone accounts.
The popularity of Korean culture, including K-pop and K-dramas, has grown strongly among young people in the Gulf.
Viu is a Hong Kong-owned service rather than a UAE startup, and Startups UAE lists it among the streaming platforms available in the UAE.
