Abu Dhabi government authority for food safety, agriculture and biosecurity

About ADAFSA

The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, known as ADAFSA, is the government body responsible for food safety, agriculture and biosecurity in Abu Dhabi.

Its work covers the whole food chain. ADAFSA licenses and inspects food businesses such as restaurants, supermarkets, factories and catering companies, setting hygiene and safety standards they must follow.

In agriculture, it supports farmers through advice, programmes and services aimed at improving productivity and making farming more sustainable in a desert environment with limited water.

Animal health and plant health are also part of its mandate, including controlling diseases, managing veterinary services and preventing harmful pests from entering the emirate.

Food security is a national priority in the UAE, which imports most of its food. ADAFSA's work supports safe food supply and the growth of local production, including modern methods such as hydroponics and vertical farming.

Food businesses in Abu Dhabi need to comply with ADAFSA regulations, including labelling rules and inspections, and consumers can report food safety concerns to the authority.

Startups UAE lists ADAFSA among the UAE's food safety and agriculture authorities, relevant to foodtech and agritech startups.
