About EWEC
Emirates Water and Electricity Company, known as EWEC, is responsible for planning, procuring and buying electricity and water in Abu Dhabi and supplying them to distribution companies. It is part of the emirate's energy sector, which is overseen by the Department of Energy.
EWEC acts as the single buyer in Abu Dhabi's power and water system. It forecasts future demand, decides what new capacity is needed and runs competitive tenders for independent power and water producers to build and operate plants. It then buys their output under long-term agreements.
This model has helped Abu Dhabi attract private investment and achieve some of the lowest costs in the world for solar power. EWEC has procured major solar projects such as Noor Abu Dhabi and Al Dhafra Solar, along with large reverse osmosis desalination plants.
The shift from thermal desalination to reverse osmosis, which uses less energy, is part of the emirate's plan to reduce emissions from water production.
EWEC also works on battery storage and integrating more renewable energy into the grid as Abu Dhabi moves towards cleaner power.
Startups UAE lists EWEC among the UAE's energy and utility organisations.
